Ireland is a member of the European Union but <strong>not of the Schengen area<\/strong>. It does not accept Schengen visas, and a Portuguese or other Schengen <strong>residence permit<\/strong> does not replace an Irish visa. If your passport is on Ireland&#8217;s visa-required list, you need an <strong>Irish short stay visa<\/strong> before you fly, even from Lisbon.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Ireland is different<\/h2>\n<p>Ireland stayed outside Schengen so that it could keep the <strong>Common Travel Area<\/strong> with the United Kingdom, which lets Irish and British citizens move freely between the two countries. As a result Ireland runs its own border checks and its own visa system.<\/p>\n<p>What this means in practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>flights from Portugal to Dublin go through <strong>passport control<\/strong> on arrival<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>Schengen visa<\/strong> gives no right to enter Ireland<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>Schengen residence permit<\/strong> (TRC) does not exempt you from an Irish visa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Who is not affected<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, who travel to Ireland with a passport or ID card<\/li>\n<li>non-EU citizens whose nationality does not need an Irish visa (for example Brazil, USA, Canada)<\/li>\n<li>family members of EU citizens who hold certain residence cards, under EU free movement rules (check the Irish rules for your case)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Who is affected<\/h2>\n<p>Citizens of countries on Ireland&#8217;s visa-required list, such as India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and many African countries, need a visa, <strong>wherever they live<\/strong>. A Nepali chef living in Porto with a TRC needs the same Irish visa as someone applying from Kathmandu, though they can apply from Portugal.<\/p>\n<h2>What to do before booking<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Check your nationality<\/strong> on the Irish Immigration Service website.<\/li>\n<li>If you need a visa, <strong>apply on AVATS<\/strong> at least three months before travel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not buy non-refundable tickets<\/strong> until the visa is issued.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your TRC is valid for at least three months after your return.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>At the airport<\/h2>\n<p>Airlines check documents before boarding flights to Ireland.
