US visa interview in Lisbon: common questions and how to prepare

The US visitor visa interview is short, and your answers matter more than your papers. Here are the questions officers usually ask residents of Portugal and how to answer them clearly.
In this article
Short answer: a US visitor visa interview usually lasts a few minutes. The officer wants to know three things: why you are travelling, who pays, and why you will come back to Portugal. Short, honest answers that match your DS-160 work better than a folder of documents. Since September 2025, residents of Portugal interview at the US Embassy in Lisbon, so bring your valid TRC.
Before the interview day
- Reread your DS-160. The officer has it on screen. Your answers must match it exactly: employer, salary, travel dates, previous refusals.
- Check your TRC. It should be valid. If it is being renewed, bring the AIMA receipt and be ready to explain.
- Know your trip. Dates, cities, where you will stay, how much it will cost.
- Arrive on time with only what the embassy allows. Large bags and electronics are usually not permitted.
Questions you are likely to hear
| Question | What the officer is checking | A strong answer |
|---|---|---|
| What is the purpose of your trip? | A real, short visit | "Ten days of tourism in New York and Washington in August." |
| What do you do in Portugal? | Stable life and income | "I work as a cook at a restaurant in Lisbon, full-time since 2023." |
| How long have you lived in Portugal? | Ties to your country of residence | Give the year and your status, e.g. residence permit since 2022. |
| Who is paying for the trip? | Money that fits the trip | "I am. I earn about €1,400 a month and have saved for this." |
| Do you have family in the USA? | Possible reasons to stay | Answer honestly; having family there is not a refusal by itself. |
| Have you travelled abroad before? | Travel history | Mention trips and visas you have used and returned from. |
Answer the question asked, in a sentence or two. Do not read from notes or memorise speeches.
What to bring
- passport and old passports with visas
- DS-160 confirmation and appointment letter
- Portuguese TRC
- employment letter, recent payslips, bank statements
- for self-employed people: activity registration, invoices, IRS return
- anything specific to your trip, such as an invitation or conference registration
Officers often do not ask for documents. Have them ready in order so you can show one quickly if asked.
Understanding 214(b)
Under US law, every visitor is presumed to intend to immigrate. A refusal under section 214(b) means the officer was not convinced of your ties or your purpose in that interview. It is not a permanent ban. You may reapply, but it makes sense only when something has changed, for example a longer employment history, a renewed TRC or a clearer travel plan.
Mistakes to avoid
- giving answers that differ from the DS-160
- hiding a previous refusal, from the USA or any other country
- saying you are "just going to see" for an open-ended stay
- bringing someone to speak for you; the interview is yours
Frequently asked questions
How long does the US visa interview take?
Usually only a few minutes. Preparation matters because there is little time to explain.
Can I take my interview in Lisbon if I am not Portuguese?
Yes, if you live in Portugal legally. Since September 2025, interviews must be in your country of nationality or residence.
Should I bring bank statements to the interview?
Yes, have them ready, even if the officer may not ask to see them.
What if my TRC expires soon?
Bring your renewal receipt and be ready to explain. A valid TRC is the clearest proof of legal residence.
