Expired residence permit in Portugal: the end of automatic extensions explained

For years Portugal extended expired residence documents automatically. That period is over. What an expired TRC means now, how the renewal receipt works and what to do before travelling.
In this article
Short answer: Portugal’s automatic extensions of expired residence documents, introduced during the pandemic and renewed several times, have ended. An expired TRC is no longer treated as valid just because of a general extension. What protects you now is a registered renewal: once you apply on AIMA’s portal and pay the fees, you receive a receipt valid for 180 days that proves your renewal is in progress inside Portugal.
Information as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
What the extensions were
From 2020, Portugal repeatedly extended the validity of expired residence documents by decree, while AIMA (and before it SEF) dealt with backlogs. Many people lived and worked for long periods with an expired card. The last extension ended on 15 October 2025, and AIMA moved to an online renewal portal opened in stages.
What applies now
- Card valid: renew within the window AIMA opens for your expiry month. The current window covers cards expiring up to January 2027.
- Card expired, renewal registered: your receipt (180 days) proves the renewal inside Portugal, for example for your employer, bank or Social Security.
- Card expired, no renewal started: you no longer benefit from a general extension. Start the renewal as soon as possible and get professional advice if you are late.
A legal specialist site also reports that, since September 2026, a renewal is no longer automatically considered approved if AIMA does not decide within 60 days. The receipt still covers you while the renewal is processed. Check this with AIMA or a lawyer for your own case.
Travelling with an expired card
This is where many people get into trouble:
- AIMA says a renewal receipt is not a travel document.
- Other Schengen countries apply the Schengen Borders Code, not Portugal’s internal rules.
- Airlines may refuse boarding if your card is expired.
- Embassies (UK, USA, Canada, Ireland and others) usually want a valid TRC when you apply for a visa from Portugal.
If you must travel, check with the airline and with the authorities of every country on your route. Where possible, wait for the new card.
Checklist
- Check your card’s expiry date today.
- Log in to AIMA’s renewal portal when your window opens.
- Pay the fees and save the receipt as PDF and on paper.
- Plan international trips for after the new card arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Is my expired residence card still valid in Portugal?
Not through the old automatic extensions, which have ended. A registered renewal with a valid receipt proves your situation inside Portugal.
Can I travel to another Schengen country with an expired TRC and a receipt?
It is risky. AIMA says the receipt is not a travel document, and other countries follow Schengen rules.
How long is the AIMA renewal receipt valid?
180 days for a registered renewal with fees paid, according to recent reports.
Can I apply for a UK or US visa with an expired TRC?
Embassies generally expect a valid residence card. Wait for the new card or ask the embassy before applying.
